How to Measure
To Ensure the Best fit, Please Follow the Measurement Guidelines Below.
We recommend using a soft measuring tape and measuring over lightweight clothing or undergarments.
Gown Rentals
The following measurements are required for rental gowns. Please follow these instructions carefully and review measuring tips before you begin.
- Get ready
Wear the shoes you plan to wear (or measure barefoot and add your heel height).Use a soft measuring tape. A helper is ideal. - Stand tall
Stand straight with feet together on a flat floor, looking forward. Don’t bend to read the tape. - Find the starting point
Locate the bony bump at the base of your neck in back (C7). That’s your starting point. - Place the tape
Have your helper anchor the tape’s zero at that neck point. - Measure straight down
Let the tape fall straight down the center of your back, over your natural curve, to the floor. Keep the tape vertical—no angles. - Record the numberRead the number where the tape touches the floor. If you measured barefoot, add your heel height (e.g., +3").If you want a longer train, add the length you want.
-
Tips For Accuracy
- Keep the tape level (parallel to the floor) and flat—no sagging or angles.
- Don’t pull too tight; the tape should be snug but not digging in.
- If measuring solo, use a mirror to check that the tape is level, or take two measurements and use the average.
- Note the units (inches or centimeters), and keep the same units across all your measurements.
-
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Measure on a diagonal or curve the tape around the arms/upper chest.
- Shrugging or rolling the shoulders forward—relax your posture.
- Using different landmarks on front vs back—use the same bony shoulder tips for both.
Measuring Solo: Tape the zero end at your neck (use gentle tape), let the tape drop, then use a mirror or mark the floor and measure to the mark after.
Avoid: Measuring at an angle, looking down (it shortens the measurement), or skipping shoes if you want the hem to cover your heels.
Upper Bust Measurement
- Stand tall with arms relaxed at your sides.
- Place the measuring tape just above the bust, directly under the armpits.
- Wrap the tape around the body, making sure it passes under both arms and stays level across the back.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight.
- Record the number where the tape meets.
Under Bust Measurement
- Stand straight with arms relaxed.
- Place the measuring tape directly under the bust, where the breast tissue ends.
- Wrap the tape evenly around the ribcage, keeping it level across the back.
- Keep the tape snug but comfortable—you should be able to take a normal breath.
- Record the number where the tape meets.
Waist Measurement
- Find your natural waist—it’s the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button.
- Wrap the measuring tape around this point, keeping it parallel to the floor.
- Don’t suck in; relax your stomach for the most accurate measurement.
- Record the number where the tape meets.
Hips Measurement
- Stand with your feet together.
- Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, usually about 7–9 inches below your waist.
- Make sure the tape is level all the way around and not twisted.
- Record the number where the tape meets.
Shoulder to Chest Length Measurement
- Start at the base of your neck, where your shoulder meets your neckline.
- Place the measuring tape at this point.
- Measure straight down to the fullest point of your chest/bust.
- Keep the tape flat against your body for accuracy.
Shoulder to Waist Measurement
Front:
- First, mark your natural waist by tying a string, ribbon, or belt snugly around the smallest part of your waist.
- Starting at the base of your neck (the hollow point at the front), place the tape measure down the center of your torso.
- Measure straight down to the top of the ribbon/string.
- Record this number as your front shoulder-to-waist length.
Back:
- Keep the string/ribbon tied around your natural waist.
- Starting at the base of your neck in the back (the bony bump), measure straight down to where the tape meets the string.
- Make sure the tape runs vertically at a 90-degree angle to the string.
- Record this number as your back shoulder-to-waist length.
Back Length to Hips Measurement
- Stand tall on a flat surface with your feet together.
- Locate the top of your neck bone in the back (the bony bump at the base of your neck).
- Place the measuring tape at this point and let it run straight down your back.
- Keep the tape perpendicular to the ground—no angles or slanting.
- Measure down to the fullest part of your hips/bottom.
- Record this number as your back length to hips measurement.
Shoulder Width Measurement
Find the landmarks (both front & back)
- Stand tall on a flat surface with your arms relaxed.
- Locate the bony tips of your shoulders (acromion points). You can feel them near where your bra straps sit—two small, firm “bumps” at the outer edge of each shoulder.
- Lightly mark each point with a washable pen or a small piece of tape.
Front Shoulder Width
- Face forward.
- Place the tape’s zero at the left shoulder point you marked.
- Keep the tape straight and level, not curved around the body.
- Measure directly across the front to the right shoulder point.
Record this number as Front Shoulder Width.
Back Shoulder Width
- Turn so your back faces the helper (or use a mirror if solo).
- Place the tape’s zero at the left shoulder point at the back.
- Keep the tape straight and parallel to the floor.
- Measure directly across the back to the right shoulder point.
- Record this number as Back Shoulder Width.
Arm Measurements
Sleeve Length Measurement
- Stand straight with your arm relaxed at your side.
- Locate the bony tip of your shoulder.
- Place the tape’s zero at this point.
- Measure straight down along the outside of the arm to your desired sleeve length (short, ¾, or full length).
- Record the number where the tape meets.
Around Armpits Measurement
- Place one hand on your waist to slightly raise your arm.
- Locate the shoulder bone at the top of the arm.
- Position the tape at this point and pass it under the armpit.
- Wrap the tape around, bringing it back to the starting point at the shoulder.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight, then record the number.
Bicep Measurement
- Place one hand on your waist to slightly raise your arm.
- Find the widest part of your upper arm, midway between your shoulder and elbow.
- Wrap the measuring tape around this point, keeping it level and snug.
- Make sure the tape isn’t too tight—you should be able to slip a finger underneath.
- Record the number where the tape meets.
